Leicester–London, United Kingdom | March 2026
The Canada Indoor Cricket Federation (CICF) marked a historic milestone for Canadian sport as the first-ever Canada Women’s National Indoor Cricket Team proudly represented the nation at an international indoor cricket tournament held in Leicester–London, United Kingdom. This landmark participation symbolizes a bold step forward in CICF’s mission to grow and globalize indoor cricket in Canada, while championing inclusivity and gender equality in the sport.
Formed in 2025, the Canada Indoor Cricket Federation is the national governing body dedicated to building structured pathways for indoor cricket talent across Canada. Shortly after its establishment, CICF achieved international recognition when it was formally welcomed into the global indoor cricket family by the World Indoor Cricket Federation (WICF) in October 2025, opening doors for Canadian participation in elite international competitions. Following that, Federation has demonstrated remarkable momentum—launching national teams, forging partnerships, and expanding participation at both grassroots and elite levels.
While CICF initially assembled a men’s team comprising experienced indoor cricket veterans, the Federation did not stop there. Despite limited resources, minimal exposure to indoor cricket, and the challenges of a newly established organization, CICF made the bold and visionary decision to equally empower women athletes. Within just three months of initiating the plan, CICF formed, trained, and sent a women’s team to compete on the international stage—an unprecedented achievement in Canadian indoor cricket history.
The Tournament
The international Tri-Nation Women’s Indoor Cricket Tournament, organized by the Action Indoor Cricket Federation (AICF), was held in Leicester–London and featured elite participation from:
- England
- United Kingdom Combined Team (players from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales)
- Canada
Unlike Team Canada, both opposing teams were seasoned international sides with prior experience in Indoor Cricket World Cup campaigns, highlighting the scale of the challenge faced by the Canadian debutants.
Team Canada: Leadership and Composition
The Canadian side was captained by Habeeba Bader, a distinguished cricketer from Canada’s National Women’s T20 outdoor cricket program. Her experience, composure, and leadership were instrumental in guiding the young team through unfamiliar conditions.
The squad included three Under-19 national-level players—Hasini, Khadeeja, and Arya—who played key roles in building competitive intensity. They were joined by passionate and committed amateur outdoor cricketers Dimple, Meenia, Mythri, Sowjanya, Sowmya, and Veena, most of whom were experiencing indoor cricket for the very first time.
A Journey of Growth and Resilience
With no prior exposure to international indoor cricket, Team Canada faced a challenging opening day. The team suffered a heavy defeat, losing all skins and grappling with the speed, intensity, and tactical nuances of the indoor game. The result was emotionally testing for a squad just beginning its journey.
However, the true character of the team emerged through resilience and adaptability. Encouragement from tournament organizers, opposition teams, and experienced former players in attendance—combined with the captain’s steady reassurance—helped reset the team mindset. The focus shifted from outcomes to learning, cohesion, and steady improvement.
Day two was marked by experimentation and adjustment, as players steadily began to understand positioning, angles, and indoor-specific strategies. By day three, the team achieved a significant breakthrough—scoring two positive skins, demonstrating collective growth, improved communication, and notable individual performances.
On the final day, the first-ever Canada Women’s Indoor Cricket Team delivered its strongest showing of the tournament. The consistent improvement displayed from day one to day four laid a promising foundation for the future of women’s indoor cricket in Canada.
A Platform for the Future
The tournament served as an unparalleled learning platform—offering lessons that no training session could replicate. Players gained firsthand insight into:
- The dynamics of team-based indoor cricket
- The importance of mutual support over individual focus
- The intensity and pace of international indoor competition
- Key differences between indoor and outdoor cricket
- Skills and habits that must be adapted—or unlearned—to succeed indoors
The measurable progress achieved after just one month of preparation under high-pressure international conditions underscores the immense potential within this group. With structured training, proper infrastructure, and sustained support, these athletes—and those who follow—have the capacity not only to compete but to achieve significant international success!
